Moncarapacho - A rural hideway, close to Olhão

Moncarapacho is a typical Barrocal (zone of the Algarve between the coast and the montains) village. The surrounding lands, famed for their fertility, give themselves up to the cultivation of the pomegranate, the citrus fruit, figs and vegetables.

The church appears to be of medieval or even earlier origin as the Romano-gothic elements appearing in the corner stones to the rear of the church suggest. The main doorway is, however, 16th century and considered to be one of the most exquisite works of Renaissance craftsmanship in the region.

Inside the church there is an interesting collection of statues dating from the 17th and 18th centuries depicting various religious figures and impressive paintings adorn the Chapels of Souls, of the Calvary and of St Anthony.

The parish museum, among its many treasures, houses an 18th century Neapolitan nativity scene comprising no less than 45 figurines with terracotta heads and wooden limbs all dressed in gold and silver trimmed 18th century costume.
