Cacela - An unspoiled traditional Algarvian fishing village

At 12Km from Tavira, the small coastal town of Cacela is populated principally by farmers and fishermen. Unspoiled by tourism, the nucleus of the town comprises whitewashed cottages, a 13th century parish church and a few café restaurants. Despite the modest size of the town, there is a rich and delicious choice of sea-food on offer.

Among the many tempting dishes, Cacela is particularly proud of its clams and cockles, which are harvested nearby at low tide, and of its exquisite prawn and lobster dishes.

The town also boasts a polygonal 18th century fort which affords spectacular views across the Ria Formosa Nature Park and over the Atlantic Ocean.
