Surfing - Tube city on the west coast

    Surfing, wind-surfing and kite-surfing goes on all year round all along the Algarvian coast with a number of outlets and surf shops dotted throughout the region offering equipment for hire, (your local tourist information centre will be able to advise you as to where to hire your equipment).

Generally, it is acknowledged that the west coast offers the best in terms of surfing and all west-coast beaches are surfable with Martinhal, being the windsurfing capital of the Algarve. Kite surfing is becoming increasingly popular in the region with many centres throughout the Algarve offering lessons and equipment hire.

The far western end of Falasia beach, at Vilamoura, is excellent for this sport, as are the beaches of Ferragudo and Salema. However, kite-surfing can be dangerous if not done properly and those who wish to try their hand at this sport are strongly advised to take a few lessons first - Algarvian winds are capricious!

If you have never surfed before (whether it be kite surfing, body surfing or just good old “hot dogging it up on the crest of a curl”) and you fancy having a go, why not drive down to the Surf Shop at Sagres where you can hire equipment (including wet-suits) at very reasonable rates and where the friendly staff will be able to advise you on lessons and the best beaches to visit - depending on the weather and wind direction and sea temperature on the particular day. Not only is surfing fun, it’s a great workout too!
