The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo - Interesting 13th c. temple.
Santa Maria

Adjacent to Tavira Castle, this church was built in the 13th century on the site of the Moorish mosque when the city fell to Christendom. Inside you can see plaques indicating the tombs of Paia Peres Correia and seven Kinghts of the Order of St James.

Paia Peres Correia, the Grand Master of the Order of St James, was instrumental in the Christian offensive that ultimately drove the Muslims from the Algarve. It is said that he took the city of Tavira with remarkable brutality in revenge for the murder of the seven Knights by the Moors of Tavira during a truce.
