All Portuguese towns will have their own Centro de Saúde (Health Centre). These are state-run clinics, usually open from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM (and often later) where you may consult one of the duty doctors – often you can simply turn up and, although you might have to wait a while, a doctor will see you eventually.
The larger towns and cities have, as you might expect, fully equipped hospitals, -e.g., there is a large general hospital on the outskirts of Portimão and there are several in Faro. In addition there are a good number of private doctors (including many from other European countries – English is widely spoken), most of which are listed in the local press.
Further, there are a number of private hospitals, the most well known in the Algarve being the Hospital Particular do Algarve at Alvor (near Portimão) with a 24 hour emergency service, operating theatre, maternity, X-ray/CT-scan facilities and a range of specialists and general practitioners in residence. Your local tourist information office will normally be able to suggest a private or state medical institution to best suit your needs, your pocket and the urgency of the problem.
