Ria Formosa Nature Park - A bird watcher's paradise.

Nature

The Ria Formosa Nature Park is a system of lagoons separated from the ocean by a line of sandy barrier islands running parallel to the coast and covering an area of about 18,400 hectares. The Park extends for about 60Km along the coastline from Manta Rota to Ancão and is situated directly on the route of birds migrating between Africa and northern Europe – a feature which makes the Ria Formosa wetlands of world ornithological importance.
Along with the many species of migrating birds, the wetlands are also home to storks, grebes, herons and many other indigenous species. The Nature Park also contains a rich variety of marine life – over 100 species of fish alone!
Meanwhile reptiles such as turtles and chameleons are a common site.
Thos wishing to visit the Ria Formosa Nature Park are best advised to start with a trip to the Information and Interpretation Centre at Quinta de Marim, 1Km from Olhão (289 704 134/5) who will be able to supply a wealth of free information, including maps suggesting a number of ornithological and nature discovery trails through the Park.
